DNR Urban Forestry Council Welcomes New Members

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR)’s Division of Forestry recently welcomed two new members to the Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council and said farewell to several members who contributed much to the council. In addition, eight council members renewed their commitment for another 3-year term.

The Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council is an advisory committee to the DNR’s Division of Forestry, guiding the best ways to preserve, protect, expand and improve Wisconsin’s urban and community forest resources. The council is comprised of 23 people appointed by the Secretary of the DNR.

Members represent the diverse groups and interests that impact our state’s urban and community forests, including representatives from professional organizations, private business owners, educators, green industry employees, nonprofit/service organizations, governmental agencies, municipalities of various sizes, utilities, concerned and active citizens and trade organizations throughout the state.

Aaron Schauer is an Urban Forestry Instructor at Gateway Technical College. He has over 20 years of experience in the arboriculture industry, including many years as an instructor at various educational institutions. He will be representing technical colleges on the council.

Paul Fliss is a Regional Forester with We Energies. His current position, as well as his past experience as a business owner and a city forester make him a valuable addition to the council. He will be representing utility arborists.

Outgoing council members are Katie Aspenson, August Ridder and Sarah Toomsen. Their insight and involvement over the past several years have been a significant asset to the Urban Forestry Council. Their contributions truly helped to advance urban forestry initiatives in Wisconsin.

“Due to the dedication, involvement and expertise of the members, Wisconsin has one of the most active urban forestry councils in the country. Thank you to those who have and continue to serve on the council. Their contributions have been invaluable. I also look forward to working with Aaron and Paul who are joining the council this year,” said Matt Koepnick, Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council Chair.
