Below is information on the online Arborist Certification study group, Climate Adaptation Planning series, Extension Landscape and Grounds Maintenance workshops and Woody Species Management training.

2025 Virtual Certified Arborist Study Group

This study group is tailored to the working arborist and will be led by leading industry subject matter experts.

5-Week Workshop – Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting Jan. 16 from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

Over the 5 weeks (9 sessions), each of the domains associated with the certified arborist exam will be covered. The following week (Monday, Feb. 17th), the certified arborist exam will be offered in conjunction with the Annual Conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The cost of the exam is separate and paid directly to ISA. You may register for the full course or attend individual sessions. 2.5 CEU credits are available per session.

Climate Adaptation Planning and Practices Training

The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture Northern Forests Climate Hub are offering an Adaptation Planning and Practices online training for forest and natural resource managers, land owners and stewards. This is an interactive training to learn about climate change impacts and to identify adaptation actions for ecosystems (rural and urban), habitats, and resource areas, and with cultural perspectives. Throughout this training, participants will develop project-specific climate adaptation plans using the Adaptation Workbook. As part of this eight-week training, all participants will receive coaching and feedback from NIACS staff in structured weekly web-based lectures and group discussion meetings. NIACS technical support and coaching are available to all participants throughout the entire training.

Cost: There are no registration fees thanks to the support of the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Northern Forests Climate Hub.

CEUs: Pending: 20 Category 1 CFEs through the Society of American Foresters and 13.5 credits through the International Society of Arboriculture.

2025 Extension Landscape & Grounds Maintenance Short Course

​The Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance Short Course is a virtual 4-week course held in February to keep green industry professionals up-to-date on the newest industry practices and technologies. International Society of Arboriculture CEUs will be provided. Topics for this short course include:

  • 5: 2024 Turf Insect and Disease Trends & Sensational Sedges
  • 12: Buckthorn Management Update & Using Plants To Control Buckthorn
  • 19: Small Scale Trees For Impact & Diseases Of Crabapples And Lilacs To Challenge Your Landscaping Skills
  • 26: Wisconsin’s Trending And Emerging Landscape Insect Pests & What’s The Deal With No Mow May?

When: Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 1 – 3:30 p.m.

Cost: Register for all four courses for $60 or individual courses for $25 each.

Winter ID And Management Of Woody Species

​Learn how to identify, manage and monitor trees and shrubs during the dormant season with Riveredge restoration ecologists. The first half of the morning will be spent indoors reviewing a large collection of freshly cut live specimens by fruit, bud, twig, branch, bark and trunk. Following lunch, the course will take place outside to review management and identify populations by setting and habitat.

 Please dress for the weather and bring a lunch.

When: Jan. 31, 2025, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (registration required by Jan. 30 at noon.)

Where: Riveredge Nature Center in Saukville, Wisconsin

Cost: $65 for members, $75 for nonmembers and $35 for currently enrolled students
