Communities across Wisconsin have significant economic growth opportunities thanks to several key funding and support programs offered by Rural Development, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These programs provide vital resources aimed at improving infrastructure, businesses and entrepreneurs across the country.

The Business & Industry Loan Guarantees program is designed to assist businesses in rural areas by offering loans that help promote economic development, job creation and improved services in communities that need it most. Through this initiative, businesses can access funding they may not have otherwise qualified for, thus enhancing their ability to expand and create new opportunities for local residents.

In addition, the Community Facilities Programs focus on improving vital infrastructure and public services across the country. By investing in these facilities, Rural Development helps foster more vibrant and sustainable rural areas.

The Intermediary Relending Program provides 1% low interest loans to local lenders to then re-lend to businesses to improve economic conditions in their communities. Through this program, a ripple effect of growth is generated, benefiting multiple projects and supporting a diverse range of local initiatives.

For emerging businesses and entrepreneurs, the Rural Business Development Grants program offers much-needed financial assistance to help launch and sustain new ventures in rural communities. Whether it’s a new startup or an expansion project, these grants ensure that small businesses have the tools they need to thrive.

The Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program is another key initiative that supports the growth of microenterprises in rural areas. This program provides training and technical assistance to help entrepreneurs build and sustain successful small businesses, particularly those operating with fewer than 10 employees.

Finally, the Value-Added Producer Grants program assists agricultural producers by helping them transform raw products into value-added goods, which enhances profitability and opens up new market opportunities. This grants program helps rural farmers and ranchers diversify their income and become more competitive in the marketplace.

These Rural Development programs work together to strengthen rural economies, provide sustainable opportunities and ensure long-term prosperity for communities across the United States. For more information about these programs, visit the USDA Rural Development website or connect with a member of the Forest Products team within the DNR for further assistance.
