SAWW Training In The Driftless Area

Driftless Area Land Conservancy will host Safety and Woods Worker (SAWW)-certified chainsaw safety and efficiency training near Muscoda, Wisconsin. Luke Saunders of Adaptive Restoration LLC will be the trainer.

Levels 1 and 2 are currently at full capacity. Level 3 will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11. Please note that participants should have completed Level 2 before registering for Level 3.

Participants in Level 3 training will spend most of the day in the field practicing techniques to operate chainsaws safely, comfortably and productively. Topics covered include reviewing information from Levels 1 and 2, focusing on planning and executing difficult tree felling, introduction to segments, precision at the stump and planning and executing limbing and bucking.

WAA Fall Seminar

The Wisconsin Arborist Association (WAA) will host this year’s Fall Seminar in-person and virtually.

The in-person seminar will be held on Sept. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Army Lake Camp & Retreat Center in East Troy, Wisconsin. Up to 6 CEUs are available. The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 10. The fee is $100 for WAA members or $110 for nonmembers plus a $25 late registration fee. Full-time students may attend for free. Register online here.

For those who prefer to participate online, the content of the in-person seminar will be repeated on a virtual platform that can be viewed Oct. 1-15. The online seminar will include five hours of virtual learning and engagement with 5 CEUs available through an online quiz. The registration deadline is Sept. 30, and the fee is $90 for WAA members or $100 for nonmembers. Full-time students may attend for free. Register online here.

Partners In Community Forestry Conference

Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, the Partners in Community Forestry conference will be held in-person in Louisville, Kentucky on Nov. 17 and 18. This conference is the largest international gathering of urban forestry practitioners, advocates, researchers and government leaders. Bring your skills, your hunger for knowledge and your passion for community forestry as you mingle with like-minded professionals; the thinkers, doers, and thought leaders in community forestry. CEUs will be available.

Partnering events held the same week include the Society of Municipal Arborists’ 57th Annual International Conference and Trade Show (Nov. 15-16), the Alliance for Community Trees Day (Nov. 16), and Urban Wood Network Academy (Nov. 19).

Apply Now For The 5th Wisconsin Community Tree Management Institute

Wisconsin Community Tree Management Institute (CTMI) is a unique training experience designed for municipal staff with tree management responsibilities but without a strong background in urban forestry. The program is ideal for staff who spend just part of their time dealing with trees. Conversely, those with a background in urban forestry but new to management will also find it useful. CTMI consists of approximately 38 instruction hours and requires students to complete an out-of-classroom project.

2021 Urban Forestry Workshop: Trees, Construction And Site Development

Registration is now open for UW-Madison, Division of Extension’s annual Urban Forestry Workshop, held Aug. 19 and Aug. 24-27.

This year’s workshop will be offered a little differently. The program usually includes a classroom lecture-style session in the morning and hands-on field activities in the afternoon. This year Extension will hold the morning portion of the workshop online to allow more attendees and offer an educational option for those who are not yet comfortable attending in-person events. The hands-on activities will build on the online session, but you are not required to attend the online session to attend the in-person portion of the class.

Municipal Forestry Institute

The Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI) is a week-long, high-level training opportunity to educate people in the leadership and managerial aspects of urban forestry. Urban forestry professionals from across the county will come together for a week-long intensive educational program that delivers a challenging opportunity to grow a more successful community tree program. Learn and master leadership and management tools of program administration, coalition building, strategic thinking, program planning and public relations. 

MFI 2021 will be held Sept. 26-Oct. 1 in Bowling Green, Ohio.

The DNR’s Forest Products Services team hosted a webinar in June 2020 that highlighted some of the positives of building with wood and explored the state of Wisconsin’s forest resources. To expand on that basic message, we are working on a series of future webinars that will address more specific themes within the broader theme of building with wood.

To best assess which topics potential attendees are most interested in learning about, we kindly ask that you fill out the survey linked below. Madison College Now Enrolling Fall 2021 Arboriculture Students

The Madison College Department of Arboriculture and Urban Forestry began offering classes in the fall of 2019 and has since been evolving with the last turbulent year.

The program is currently delivering tree identification courses, climbing and practical tree care skills and tree biology in a safe “hybrid” format that combines online and regulated in-person instruction.
